ABOUT US

Almost 90% of all the eggs consumed in Hawaii come from the mainland. 10 years ago, two family-owned companies saw this problem and realized how unsustainable it was. Hidden Villa Ranch and Rose Acre Farms decided to combine their resources, knowledge, and expertise in the egg industry and formed Villa Rose egg farm. Since then, Villa Rose has been committed to sustainability and making key decisions that follow that model.

Our farm was built to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact, giving back to the community and land that has hosted it. Villa Rose hopes that it can be an example to others and can be used as a model of sustainable agriculture. The goal of Villa Rose is to help Hawaii rely less on imports from the mainland and wishes to replace all of the eggs coming from the mainland.

The Hawaiian islands hold a special place in history as the home of advanced cultures who flourished in agriculture and sustainability, working only with what was available to them on the island. As time went on, and tourism surged, the islands became more reliant on imports to meet the rising level of demand and the importance of local agriculture was lost. Currently over 85% of goods are imported and the recent pandemic shed more light on just how vulnerable these precious islands are. As mainland farms struggled to match their own states demand, it became more difficult to ship goods out to the most isolated archipelago in the world, Hawaii.
Current inefficiencies fueled inspiration and laid the foundations of developing a fully sustainable farm on a large scale to support all of Hawaii from a local level. Thus, Villa Rose was born and Waialua Fresh was created. With the Waianae mountain range behind us, this parcel was strategically chosen for its natural defenses against the elements, fresh trade winds, and favorable conditions to ensure the optimum environment for the health of our chickens. Not to mention, all of our chickens are cage-free.

Spanning across 300 acres on the North Shore of O’ahu, Waialua Fresh is a completely off-grid operation. Solar powered, energy independent, carbon neutral and built by local tradesmen, the farm has supported Hawaii’s sustainability goals while also creating more than 400 jobs for the economy. It’s solar arrays double as cage free shelter for the hens with plenty of storage to reuse the energy and keep the farm running. The chicken waste is processed through our biochar machine which converts it into a carbon-rich fertilizer that is then distributed and shared with local farmers. In addition, we have an independent water well and it’s waste water is used for irrigation, meaning our farm has zero run off. We operate on an entirely closed loop system and believe our commitment to sustainability can lead a new frontier of agriculture in Hawaii that is focused on reducing our environmental impact, and protecting this island many of us call home.

It is our purposeful intention of Villa Rose and Waialua Fresh to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact, giving back to the community and the land.
